Who applies for a UAE visa through Emirates.com
The Emirates.com visa application is an entry permit for the United Arab Emirates, handled online for travellers with a confirmed airline booking. You upload a colour copy of your passport and one colour photo, and the approved UAE visa is sent by email. Applications must be submitted at least 4 international working days before arrival, processing takes about 3 to 4 working days, and the UAE visa fees paid there are nonrefundable. Whether you are going to Dubai for a holiday or a business trip, getting the photo right before you upload it saves you from having to resubmit the application.
UAE visa photo size explained
For the online upload, our template makes a digital photo of 300×369 pixels with a file size under 40 KB. The head takes about 72% of the photo height, with a small margin of about 8% above the hair. The ICP Personal Photo Specifications describe the same composition for a printed photo: 35–40 mm wide, with the face filling 70–80% of the photo. That is a tighter crop than many travellers expect. A photo where the face fills almost the entire frame fails, and so does a photo with a small face in a large background.
Background colour of the photo
The ICP national standard asks for a plain, light-coloured photo background and does not name one shade. The GDRFA Dubai tourist visa channel asks for a white background. A plain white or very light grey background with no shadows works for the Emirates.com upload; if you later apply through GDRFA, use white. A dark or patterned background makes it hard for automated systems to find the outline of the face in the photo and leads to rejection.
Lighting, expression and pose
Border systems use the visa photo for automated facial recognition, so the ICP document is strict about how the face looks. The light must be even, with no shadows on the face or behind the head and no flash reflections. Look square on to the camera with both edges of the face clearly visible, keep a neutral expression with the mouth closed, and keep your eyes open with no hair across them. The photo must show natural skin tones, so avoid heavy filters or colour correction on the photo.
Glasses and head coverings
Glasses are allowed in the visa photo if the lenses are not dark tinted, there is no flash glare on them, and the frames do not cover the eyes; lighter frames are preferred. Head coverings are permitted for religious reasons only, as long as the whole face from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead and both sides of the face stay visible in the photo.
Uploading the photo to the online application
The application asks for a digital photo file, so upload the original photo rather than a scan of a print or a photo of a photo, which loses sharpness. A photo taken more than six months ago may not match the live image captured at the border, so take a new photo for each visa application. Before you upload the photo, open it at full size and look for shadows on the cheeks or forehead, objects in the background, hair across the eyes and soft focus: a blurry or low-contrast photo fails the "sharp focus, high quality" rule of the ICP specification. Taking the photo yourself with a phone
- Face a window in daylight; a window behind you puts your face in shadow.
- Stand in front of a plain, pale wall, far enough away that your body casts no shadow on it.
- Ask someone to hold the phone at eye level; a close-up selfie can distort the face in the photo.
- Look straight into the lens, do not tilt your chin or turn your head.
- Relax your face, close your mouth and take several photos so you can pick the best one.
UAE visa photo checklist
- Correct photo size: 300×369 pixels, under 40 KB.
- Plain white or light grey photo background, no shadows or patterns.
- Face filling about 70–80% of the photo, centred.
- Neutral expression, mouth closed, both eyes open.
- Colour photo taken within the last 6 months.
- Nobody else and no objects in the photo, such as a chair back or a toy.
Do you need a UAE visa in advance?
It depends on your passport. Citizens of 50 or more countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia and most EU member states, receive a multiple-entry 90-day visit visa on arrival, valid for 6 months from the date of issue. Other nationals apply for a UAE visa before the trip, through Emirates.com if they fly with the airline, or online through the GDRFA portal, which does not require an airline booking. Entry is always subject to immigration approval.
Emirates.com or a GDRFA Dubai visa
The Emirates.com channel is only open to people flying with the airline. The GDRFA Dubai single-entry tourist visa is a separate channel with no booking needed: this Dubai visa costs AED 200 for a 30-day stay or AED 300 for a 60-day stay, plus 5% VAT, and applicants already inside the country pay extra charges. GDRFA digital services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For a Dubai visa through GDRFA, the photo needs a white background, and nationals of Iraq, Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan also submit a national identity card. One UAE visa photo with a plain white background and a correct crop works for both channels.
Photos of children
The ICP document has no separate photo rules for children, so the same background, face size, expression and lighting rules apply to a child's visa photo. For babies, a neutral face with open eyes can take a few attempts; take several photos and run each one through the AI check.
