What the UAE passport photo is for

The United Arab Emirates passport is the travel document issued to Emirati citizens. It proves your identity and nationality, and you show it at immigration and customs every time you travel abroad. The UAE passport is a biometric passport: an electronic chip stores your personal data and the facial features taken from your passport photo. That is why the UAE passport photo has to follow strict rules on size, head position, background and expression. A passport photo that does not meet them can delay your application or be rejected at the photo step.

UAE passport photo size explained

The UAE passport photo size is 4×6 cm, which is 40 mm wide and 60 mm high. This is taller than the square 2×2 inch passport photo used in the United States and larger than the 35×45 mm passport photo size used in many other countries, so a print made for another passport will not fit. In our UAE template the head is about 38 mm from the chin to the top of the hair, with about 6 mm of space between the top of the head and the upper edge of the photo. Printed at 300 DPI, the photo stays sharp at this size. The official UAE photo page lists the photo specifications; our online tool follows them when it crops your photo.

Background and colour of the photo

The UAE passport photo needs a plain light background. Our template uses a light grey tone, which keeps the face clearly separated from the background and avoids the washed-out look a pure white wall can give with pale skin or light clothing. The background must be even, without shadows, patterns, furniture or other people. The passport photo must be in colour, with natural skin tones; a black and white photo does not meet the colour requirement, and filters or beauty effects change how your face looks. Our AI replaces the background of your photo with the correct light grey and keeps the colours natural.

Pose, expression and face

  • Look straight into the camera with your head centred in the photo.
  • Keep a neutral expression with your mouth closed and both eyes open.
  • Your full face, from the chin to the top of the hair, must be visible in the passport photo.
  • Remove glasses, so there is no glare or frame over your eyes.
  • Hair should not cover your eyes or the outline of your face.
  • Keep your shoulders level and face the camera directly, without turning to one side.

Printed UAE passport photo or online upload

The UAE passport photo can be used both as a printed photo and as a digital photo for online submission. If you apply at a service centre, bring printed passport photos in the 4×6 cm size. If you apply online, you upload a digital passport photo with your application, so you need a clear photo file rather than a scan of an old print. Our online passport photo maker gives you both: a digital photo you can upload and a print sheet you can print at home or at a photo shop at 300 DPI.

How to apply for a UAE passport

UAE passports are issued by the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICA). To apply, you must be a UAE citizen with a valid Emirates ID. You can apply online through the ICA website: create an account, fill in the passport application form, upload the required documents and your passport photo, and pay the fee online. You can also apply in person at a designated passport issuance centre, where you hand over the form, the documents and the printed photos and pay at the centre.

The documents usually include the completed passport application form, your Emirates ID, a birth certificate for minors, passport-sized photographs that follow the specifications, and any extra documents your case requires. The passport fee depends on the validity period, and additional service fees may apply, so check the current amount on the ICA website before you pay. Once the application is approved, you collect the new passport from the centre or have it delivered to your registered address.

Renewal and replacement

A UAE passport is typically valid for 5 or 10 years, depending on the age of the holder at the time of issue. You can renew an Emirati passport online or in person; the renewal process is similar to the first application and needs a new passport photo in the same 4×6 cm size. If your passport is lost or stolen, report it to the police and then apply for a replacement passport through the ICA. A replacement passport also needs a fresh photo, so it is worth having a recent digital passport photo ready.

Passport photos for children

Children need their own UAE passport and their own passport photo. A parent or legal guardian submits the application for a minor, and both parents give their consent for a child under 18. The photo rules are the same as for adults: the right size, a plain light background, a neutral face and open eyes. For a baby, lay the child on a plain light sheet and take the photo from above; our AI straightens the photo, replaces the background and crops it to the 4×6 cm passport photo size.

Other UAE documents and their photos

Each UAE document has its own photo format, so do not reuse a print made for another one. The Emirates ID and residence visa photo is 35×40 mm on a white background, and the UAE family book photo is 35×45 mm, also on white. The UAE driving license photo has the same 40×60 mm size as the passport photo, and the UAE visa photo for Emirates.com is a digital file measured in pixels. For travel information and services abroad, see the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

UAE passport photo checklist

  • Photo size of 4×6 cm (40×60 mm).
  • Head about 38 mm tall, with about 6 mm of space above the hair.
  • Plain light grey background, with no shadows.
  • Colour photo, sharp, with no filters or retouching.
  • Neutral face, mouth closed, eyes open, no glasses.
  • Recent photo that shows how you look today.

Lighting for a good passport photo

Light decides more about a passport photo than the camera does. The best passport photos are taken in soft daylight that falls evenly on the face from the front. Stand facing a window, not with your back to it, and avoid direct sunlight, which leaves hard shadows under the nose and chin. Overhead lamps in a room cast shadows in the eye sockets, and a camera flash can leave glare on the skin and a shadow on the wall behind you. Even light on both sides of the face is what a passport photo check looks for. If one side of your face is darker than the other, turn slightly towards the light or take the photo at another time of day.

Clothing, make-up and accessories

Wear everyday clothes in a colour that stands out from a light grey background; a dark or mid-tone top works better than a pale one. Whatever you wear in the Emirates or abroad, the face has to stay fully visible from the chin to the forehead, with no shadow falling across it. Keep make-up natural, so the photo looks like you on the day you travel. Remove hats, sunglasses, headphones and large earrings that hide the shape of the face. Uniforms and clothing with large logos are best avoided in a passport photo.

Digital passport photo file for online submission

When you apply online, the passport photo is a file, not a print. Upload the original digital photo, not a phone picture of a printed photo or a screenshot, because a copy loses sharpness and colour. The photo must be in focus, evenly lit and correctly cropped to the 4×6 cm proportions. Check which file formats the online form accepts before you upload; our passport photo maker gives you a standard image file. Do not edit the photo afterwards with filters or beauty apps, since a retouched passport photo can fail the face check of a biometric passport.

Printing passport photos at home or in a shop

If you need printed passport photos, download the print sheet from our tool. It places several passport photos of the right size on one sheet of standard photo paper, so you can print them at home on a colour printer or at any photo shop. Print at 300 DPI with no scaling, choose "actual size" in the print settings, and check one photo with a ruler: it should measure 40 mm wide and 60 mm high. Cut along the edges with scissors or a paper trimmer, keeping the cut straight. Glossy or matte photo paper both work, as long as the print is sharp and the colours look natural. Ordinary office paper is too thin and dull for passport photos.

How our AI checks your passport photo

After you upload a photo, the AI finds your face, measures the head size and places it in the 4×6 cm frame with the correct space above the hair. It then removes the original background and replaces it with an even light grey. Finally it checks the passport photo against the requirements: head position and tilt, eyes open and visible, neutral expression, even light on the face, sharpness and no glare. If something does not pass, the tool shows what to fix, so you can take another photo straight away instead of finding out at the passport office. You see the result before you download, and the digital passport photo is ready in seconds.

Why passport photos get rejected

Most rejected passport photos fail for simple reasons. The photo is the wrong size because it was cropped for another country. The head is too small because the photo was taken from too far away. The background has a shadow, a pattern or a visible edge of a door or wall. The face is not straight, the eyes are half closed, or the person is smiling with an open mouth. Glasses reflect the light, or hair falls over one eye. Some photos are simply too old and no longer look like the applicant. A quick check before you submit saves a second visit and keeps your passport application on schedule.

Passport photos for people living in the Emirates and abroad

Emirati citizens who live in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah or any other emirate can take the passport photo at home and apply online. Citizens who are abroad can prepare the photo the same way, because the specifications do not depend on where it is taken. Because the photo is made online, you can prepare it wherever you are, then upload it or print it locally at the correct size. The rules for the passport photo do not change with your location: the size, the light background and the neutral face stay the same.

Using one photo for several applications

Many people need passport photos for more than one purpose at the same time. Keep in mind that each document in the United Arab Emirates has its own format. The passport photo is 4×6 cm, while other documents use different sizes and backgrounds. Make a separate photo for each document with our tool, so every application gets a photo of the right size. You can upload the same selfie each time and pick a different document; the AI crops and checks the photo again for the new format.

Passport photos of babies and toddlers

A baby passport photo is the hardest one to take, but the rules are the same: eyes open, a plain light background, no hands, toys or dummy in the frame, and no other person visible. Lay the baby on its back on a plain light sheet and take the passport photo from directly above, with soft daylight from a window. For a toddler, sit the child on a chair in front of a light wall, or let a parent hold the child from behind under a light cloth that stays out of the frame. Take several photos in a row and pick the one where the child looks at the camera with a calm face. The AI removes the sheet or wall, sets the light grey background and crops the passport photo for the UAE format, so you only need one good shot.

Passport photos for older applicants

Older applicants in the UAE can take the passport photo sitting down, which keeps the head steady and straight. Ask someone to hold the phone at eye level about an arm's length away. Take glasses off for the passport photo, so there is no glare over the eyes, and keep the whole face uncovered. Natural lines and grey hair are part of a true likeness, so there is no need to retouch them; a passport photo should show you as you look today.

What to bring to a UAE service centre

If you apply in person, prepare everything before the visit. Bring the completed application form, your Emirates ID with a copy, a birth certificate for a child, any extra documents your case needs, and printed passport photos that follow the 4×6 cm format. Check each passport photo before you leave home: cut straight, no fingerprints on the surface, no creases and no ink on the back that shows through. Keep the passport photos in an envelope so they stay flat and clean. Staff at the centre in the UAE may refuse a photo that is bent, damaged or does not match the specifications, and you would need to come back with new passport photos.

Why the face matters for a biometric passport

The chip in a UAE passport stores the facial features of the holder. When your identity is checked, your face can be compared with that stored image. A clear, evenly lit picture with a neutral expression and open eyes makes this comparison faster and more reliable. Shadows, a tilted head, a wide smile or glare from glasses change the measured shape of the face, and that is the main reason the rules ask for a plain, straight-on portrait. Following them helps the photo pass the application check and gives the chip a clear, true image of the face of the UAE passport holder.

A quick self-check before you submit

Look at the final picture at full screen. Your eyes should be sharp, with no red-eye and no reflections. The face should be centred, with the same distance from each ear to the edge of the frame. Skin tones should look natural, neither orange nor grey. The top of your hair should sit just below the upper edge, with the chin well above the bottom. If any of this looks wrong, retake it: a new selfie takes a minute, while a rejected application can cost you days.

Keeping your passport photo for later

Save the digital file after you download it. The same passport photo can be printed again if you need extra copies for the same application, and you avoid a new photo session. Remember that a passport photo should be recent: when you renew your passport years later, or when your appearance changes, take a new photo instead of reusing the old file.

Common UAE passport photo mistakes

Our online AI check catches these passport photo mistakes before you download the photo.

Wrong photo size
A 35×45 mm or 2×2 inch print made for another passport is not the 4×6 cm UAE passport photo size.
Head too small or too large
In the UAE format the head is about 38 mm tall. A photo taken from too far away leaves the face too small.
Shadows on the background
Side or overhead light casts shadows on the wall. Use soft frontal light for the passport photo.
Smile, open mouth or closed eyes
The passport photo needs a neutral face with both eyes open, so the biometric chip can use it.
Glasses or hair over the face
Take off glasses and keep hair away from your eyes so your whole face is visible.
Blurry, old or filtered photo
A soft, outdated or filtered photo may be rejected. Use a recent original photo from the camera.
