Our online check validates your visa photo against each size and photo quality parameter below, so the photo is ready for a printed application or an online upload.
An Indonesian visa lets a foreign national enter, stay in and leave the country for a set period. Every application includes a recent photo of the applicant, next to a passport valid for at least six months from the date of entry with at least one blank page, a completed application form, proof of accommodation, a travel itinerary and proof of funds. The photo is the one item you can prepare yourself in a few minutes, so it is worth getting the size and background right before you submit the application.
Our template for the Indonesia visa photo is 35×45 mm, the same as 3.5×4.5 cm or about 1.38×1.77 inches. That is a portrait rectangle, not a square. Inside this frame the head size is about 34.5 mm from the chin to the top of the hair, and there is a small gap of about 3 mm between the top of the hair and the top edge of the photo. In other words, your face fills most of the frame: a visa photo where the head looks small, or where the hair is cut off at the top, does not match this size. For a printed visa photo we export the file at 600 DPI, so the print stays sharp even at this small size.
Some embassy checklists simply ask for "passport-sized" photos and may name another photo size. Always read the checklist from the embassy or consulate where you apply; if it lists a different photo size, follow the embassy. Our tool makes the 35×45 mm visa photo size described above.
A correct digital file can still end up the wrong size on paper. When you print the visa photo at home or in a print shop, set the print size to 100% (actual size) and turn off options such as "fit to page" or "fill", which scale the image. After printing, measure the photo with a ruler: it should be 35 mm wide and 45 mm high. If the size is off by a few millimetres, the printer has scaled it, so print again rather than trimming the edges, because cutting changes the head size and the margin above the hair. Use glossy or matte photo paper and cut along the guide lines. A small error in size is easy to miss, so measure every print before you add it to your documents.
The frame size alone is not enough: the size of your head inside the photo matters just as much. With a head size of about 34.5 mm in a 45 mm frame, the face takes up most of the height, and only a narrow strip of background shows above the hair. If you stand too far from the camera, the head size comes out too small; if you stand too close, the chin or hair gets cut off. Our AI measures the head in your photo and scales the crop so the head size, the top margin and the centre line all match the template.
The background should be plain and light: our template uses a light grey (#eeeeee) with no shadows, patterns or objects behind you. Look straight into the camera with a neutral face, your mouth closed and both eyes open. Keep your head straight and centred, with your shoulders visible at the bottom of the frame. Hair should not cover your eyes or the outline of your face. Take off glasses to avoid glare and dark frames over the eyes. The visa photo must be a recent colour photo; skip filters, beauty effects and heavy editing so that it still looks like you.
There are two main ways to apply. You can submit the completed form with all documents to the nearest Indonesian embassy or consulate, usually with printed photos. Some countries also offer an online application through the Indonesian government's official website, where the photo is uploaded as a digital file. This visa photo is suitable for both: print the 35×45 mm photo at 600 DPI for a paper application, or upload the digital photo for an online application. For electronic options see our Indonesia e-visa registration photo and Indonesia eVoA photo pages.
There are several visa types: a tourist visa for leisure travel, a business visa for meetings and conferences, a social-cultural visa for cultural exchanges and family visits, a student visa and a work visa. Each visa type has its own requirements and validity period; for example, business visas may need an invitation letter and student visas an acceptance letter. Whatever the type, the application includes recent photos, so read the checklist for your visa type and prepare the photo to match it.
First choose the visa type that matches the purpose of your trip. Then gather the documents, including your passport and the visa photo, and fill in the application form accurately; the form can usually be downloaded from the official embassy or consulate website. Submit the application with the documents, pay the visa fee, which depends on the visa type and length of stay, and wait for processing. Processing can take from a few days to a few weeks, so check the times with the embassy. For official visa information see the Directorate General of Immigration and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Certain nationalities can enter visa-free or get a visa on arrival for short stays, and the rules change often, so check the latest regulations before you prepare your photo.
