The Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero is the ID for non-EU nationals living legally in Spain. The card shows your NIE number: the number is permanent, while the card itself has to be renewed (see our NIE photo page).
Spanish guidance published by UCM asks for two recent colour photos, about 32 mm tall by 26 mm wide, on a plain white background. This carné photo is smaller than a passport photo (4.5 × 3.5 cm), and many photo booths print passport photos by default. Under the 1997 order, the photo is reproduced in colour on the Spain TIE card itself, so an off-white or dark photo gives a weak result.
The Spanish Embassy in Ottawa says you apply in person within one month of arriving in Spain, at the police station or immigration office of your province. The fee is paid with Modelo 790, código 012 (UCM cites €16.08). Some stations take the photo on site; ask when you book. A renewal needs new photos with the same rules.
