The card uses a small colour photo of your face. Our online AI check validates your photo against each parameter below.
The NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is the identification number that Spain gives to foreign nationals. You need a Spanish NIE to open a bank account, sign a rental contract, apply for a job, pay taxes or buy property in Spain. The number is a letter (X, Y or Z), seven digits and a final letter, for example X1234567T. The Spain NIE card shows this number with your name, surname, date of birth and a photo of the holder.
The photo for the Spain NIE card is 32 mm high and 26 mm wide. In our template the head is about 23.5 mm from chin to the top of the head, with about 2 mm between the top of the hair and the edge of the photo. The photo must be recent and in colour, taken against a plain white background, with your face looking straight at the camera and fully in view. Your head must be uncovered, and dark glasses or any garment that makes it hard to identify you are not allowed. The file is prepared at 600 DPI so the small photo stays sharp when printed.
Fill in the EX-15 application form, which you can get from the Spanish Ministry of the Interior. Prepare your valid passport or national ID and a copy, proof of your address in Spain, and documents that justify why you need the NIE, such as a job offer or a property purchase agreement. Then book an appointment at a police station or immigration office through the official appointment website. At the appointment you hand in the form and documents and may pay a fee at a bank.
The Spain NIE number itself does not expire, but a temporary resident may need to renew the card. If you also need a Spain TIE card photo, you can make it online too, in the size of that card. For a Spanish ID card, see the Spain DNI photo page.
Most forms and steps of the Spain NIE process are in Spanish, so it can help to bring someone who speaks Spanish. After processing, which can take from a few days to a few weeks, you collect the Spain NIE card at the office or receive it by mail.
