What a Russian visa is for

This visa is the document that lets a foreign national enter, stay in and leave the country for a set period. It is issued for a specific purpose, and every visa type asks for the same kind of photo. The main types are:

  • Tourist visa, for leisure and sightseeing trips.
  • Business visa, for meetings and other business activities.
  • Student visa, for people enrolled at a Russian educational institution.
  • Work visa, for foreign nationals employed in Russia.
  • Transit visa, for travellers passing through Russia to another country.

Whichever of these you apply for, the photo follows the same 35×45 mm format, so one good photo works for any visa type.

Russia visa photo size explained

The photo size is 35×45 mm, which is 3.5×4.5 cm. This is a portrait rectangle, not a square, so a photo cut for a US 2×2 inch passport will not fit. In our template the head takes about 33 mm from the chin to the top of the head, and there is a margin of about 3 mm between the top of the hair and the top edge of the photo. The face sits in the centre, with an equal gap on the left and right. A print at 600 DPI keeps fine detail sharp at this small size, and a digital file should stay under 300 KB.

The background must be plain white, without shadows, patterns or objects behind you. The photo has to be a recent colour photo, so that it shows how you look today. Skip filters, beauty modes and heavy editing, so the photo looks like you in person.

How the Russian visa application works

The application follows a clear order, and the photo is part of the very first step:

  • Choose the visa type that matches the purpose of your trip.
  • Collect the documents: a passport valid for at least six months beyond your stay with two blank pages, an invitation letter, travel medical insurance, proof of accommodation and of sufficient funds.
  • Fill in the Russian visa application form on the official consular website and sign it.
  • Book an appointment at the nearest Russian embassy or consulate and submit the form with your documents and your photo.
  • Pay the visa fee, which depends on the visa type and processing speed.
  • Wait for processing, which usually takes from 4 to 20 business days, then collect your passport with the visa inside and check that all details are correct.

The invitation letter comes from a Russian host, a travel agency or a company for tourist and business trips, and from the educational institution for a student visa. Check the exact list on the page of the embassy you apply to, for example the Embassy of Russia in Canada.

Digital photo for the application form

This photo format is also suitable for online submission. A digital file follows the same 35×45 mm format and white background as the printed photo. Keep it within 300 KB, and use the original camera image rather than a scan of an old print. Our tool exports a digital visa photo that already meets these limits. If you are applying for the electronic visa instead, use our Russian e-visa photo page, because that path has its own upload rules.

Printing your visa photo

For the consulate appointment you bring a printed photo. Download the print sheet, print it at 600 DPI on glossy or matte photo paper and cut out the photo along the guide lines. Check that the printed photo is exactly 35×45 mm, sharp and in colour, and that the white background has no grey patches. A home printer works if it prints true colours; otherwise any photo printing service can print the file for you.

Lighting, camera and pose

Most rejected photos fail for simple reasons: uneven light, a tilted head or a camera held too close. Stand facing a window during the day so the light falls evenly on both sides of your face. Avoid a ceiling lamp directly above you, which casts dark shadows under the eyes and nose, and avoid direct sunlight, which makes you squint. Hold the camera at eye level, about an arm's length away, or ask someone to take the photo from one to two metres. A camera that is too close makes the nose look larger and distorts the face. Take several photos in a row and upload the sharpest photo of the set.

Keep your shoulders straight and your head level, without tilting it up, down or to the side. Look directly into the lens with your eyes open and your mouth closed. Pull long hair back from your face so the eyebrows and the outline of the face are clearly visible. Wear ordinary clothes in a colour that is different from the white background, so the outline of your shoulders stays clear.

What our AI check looks for

Before you download, the AI check looks for the problems that most often spoil a home photo: a wrong size or head size, a background that is grey or has shadows, a blurry or pixelated image, red eyes, reflections on glasses, and heavy editing such as smoothed skin. It tells you what to fix before you download the file, so you do not find out at the appointment.

Visa photo checklist

  • Correct size: 35×45 mm (3.5×4.5 cm), portrait format.
  • Head about 33 mm tall, about 3 mm of space above the hair.
  • Plain white background, no shadows or patterns.
  • Neutral expression, mouth closed, both eyes open and looking at the camera.
  • Head straight and centred, the full face visible.
  • Glasses and hats off, hair away from the eyes.
  • Recent, sharp colour photo with no filters.

Children and other documents

Children and babies need their own photo with the same size and white background. For a baby, lay the child on a plain white sheet and take the photo from above; the AI will crop and straighten it. If you also need a photo for another document, see the international passport photo or the internal passport photo pages, which list the requirements for those documents.

Common Russian visa photo mistakes

Our AI check catches these mistakes before you download the photo.

Wrong photo size
A 2×2 inch square or a cropped phone photo is not the 35×45 mm portrait format the consulate asks for.
Head too small or too large
The head should be about 33 mm tall with a small margin above the hair. A distant selfie leaves the face too small.
Grey or uneven background
Side or overhead light casts shadows on the wall. The background must be plain white.
Smile, open mouth or closed eyes
Keep a neutral face with your mouth closed and both eyes open, looking straight at the camera.
Glasses, hats or hair over the face
Take off glasses and hats, and keep hair away from your eyes so the full face is visible.
Old, blurry or filtered photo
The visa photo must be recent, sharp and in colour. Use the original image from the camera, without filters.

Russia visa photo FAQ

What size is a Russia visa photo?

A Russia visa photo is 35×45 mm (3.5×4.5 cm), in portrait format, with the head about 33 mm tall from chin to crown.

Can I use a 2×2 inch passport photo for a Russian visa?

No. A 2×2 inch photo is square, while the Russian visa photo is a 35×45 mm rectangle. Make a new photo in the right size.

Do I need a printed or a digital photo?

Our tool gives you both. The 35×45 mm format is suitable for online submission as a digital file, and you can print the same photo at 600 DPI to bring to the embassy or consulate with your documents.

What documents do I need for a Russian visa besides the photo?

A passport valid for at least six months beyond your stay with two blank pages, the signed application form, an invitation letter, travel medical insurance, and proof of accommodation and funds. The embassy you apply to publishes the full list for each Russian visa type.

How long does a Russian visa take?

Processing times vary, but it usually takes from 4 to 20 business days. You can check the status of your application with the embassy or consulate.

Can I make a Russian visa photo for my child?

Yes. A child's photo uses the same 35×45 mm format and white background. For a baby, lay the child on a plain white sheet and take the photo from above.

Can I wear glasses in my Russian visa photo?

We recommend taking them off. Glasses can cause glare and hide the eyes, and our AI check flags reflections on the lenses.

Is the Russia visa photo free?

Yes. The digital photo and the AI check are free; only the optional retouch costs $5.99.
