A French visa photo must meet the Schengen photo requirements. Our online check tests your visa photo against every size and photo quality parameter below.
A France visa lets a foreign national enter, stay in or pass through France for a set period. There are three main kinds: the short-stay visa (the Schengen visa) for stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism, business or family visits; the long-stay visa for stays longer than 90 days, often for work, study or family reunification; and the transit visa for travellers who pass through on the way to another destination. Every one of these visas asks for the same kind of photo: a recent passport-style photo that meets the Schengen visa photo requirements. So whether you plan a short holiday or a year of study, you prepare your visa photo the same way.
The France visa photo size is 35×45 mm, which is 3.5×4.5 cm, in portrait orientation. It is the same size used for the passport photo and the ID card photo. In our template the head size is about 34.5 mm from the chin to the top of the head, and there is a small margin of about 3 mm between the top of the hair and the top edge of the photo. Your face fills most of the frame, so a photo where you stand far from the camera will not meet the size rule even if the paper is cut to 35×45 mm.
The sample photos published by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs show examples of an accepted and a rejected visa photo. Keep the PDF open next to your own picture and compare the head position, the framing and the light. Compare your photo with these sample photos before you print it. Our online tool measures the head size for you and crops the photo to the exact visa photo size.
A visa photo needs a plain, light, even background: light grey or another light neutral colour, with no shadows, objects or patterns behind you. A white wall at home often comes out grey or blue in a phone photo, and a lamp from the side leaves a shadow on one side of the face. The photo characteristics sheet of the Consulate General in Los Angeles describes the photo characteristics in English. Our photo maker replaces the background with a plain light one, so you can take the photo anywhere with good daylight.
Look straight into the camera with a neutral expression and your mouth closed. Both eyes must be open and clearly visible, and your head must be straight, not tilted or turned. Keep your hair away from your eyes and make sure the whole face, from the chin to the forehead, is visible in the photo. Glasses often cause glare on the lenses, so it is safest to take them off for the photo. Avoid a smile, a raised eyebrow or a hand near the face.
Most applications start online on France-Visas, the official visa website of the French government. You fill in the visa application form online, then book an appointment at the nearest consulate or visa application center, which can often be done online too. At the appointment you submit the application with all required documents and pay the visa fee. Depending on where you apply, the visa photo is either uploaded online as a digital photo file or handed in as a printed photo. Check the instructions of your consulate or visa center, and keep both a printed photo and the digital photo file ready.
Our maker gives you the visa photo as a digital file and as a print sheet. For a printed photo, use the print sheet at its full size, print it at 600 DPI on photo paper and cut out the photo along the guides so that it measures exactly 35×45 mm. Do not scale the sheet in the print dialog, because a small change in scale changes the photo size. A home inkjet printer or a photo shop both work. Check that the print is sharp, in colour and without stripes or marks before you take it to the appointment. Before cutting, measure the printed frame with a ruler: it should be 35 mm wide and 45 mm tall, with the head about 34.5 mm from chin to crown. If the numbers are off, look for a "fit to page" option in the printer settings, switch it off and print again.
When a visa photo is submitted online, the digital file has to show the same thing as a good print: the right crop, a plain light background and a sharp face. Use the original photo file that our tool gives you. A phone photo of a printed photo, or a scan of an old print, loses sharpness and colour and often shows glare from the paper. Do not edit the downloaded photo in another app, add filters or compress it again, because every change can soften the face or shift the colours of the photo.
After you upload a photo, our online photo maker finds your face, measures the head size and the position of the eyes, and crops the photo to the 35×45 mm frame. It then removes the original background and replaces it with a plain light one. Finally, the AI check looks at the photo quality: sharpness, lighting, shadows on the face, open eyes, a closed mouth and a straight head. If something fails, you see which rule the photo breaks and can retake it in a minute instead of finding out at the appointment.
The photo is only one part of the file. You usually also need a valid passport with at least two blank pages and a validity of at least three months beyond the date you plan to leave the country, the completed and signed application form, proof of travel arrangements such as flight bookings and accommodation, travel medical insurance that covers at least €30,000 for medical emergencies, evidence of enough money for your stay, and documents that support the purpose of your visit, such as an invitation letter or a confirmation of enrolment for students. A wrong photo can delay the whole application, so prepare your visa photo together with these documents and keep copies of everything you submit.
Visa fees depend on the type of visa and your nationality. A short-stay visa typically costs around €80, while long-stay visas may have different fees. A short-stay visa is usually processed within 15 calendar days, and a long-stay visa may take longer, often up to 2 months. Apply well before your travel date, especially in peak travel seasons. You can track the status of your application through the consulate or visa application center, and once it is approved you collect your passport with the visa inside.
They are the same. A short-stay visa for France is a Schengen visa, and its photo requirements follow the common Schengen photo standard: 35×45 mm size, a plain light background and a neutral face. You prepare the visa photo for a long-stay visa in the same way.
First, decide which type of French visa fits the purpose of your trip, because the list of documents depends on it. Next, gather every document, including your visa photo, and fill in the application form accurately on the official website. Then book an appointment at the nearest French consulate or visa application center; you can find yours with the consulate locator of the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs. At the appointment you hand in the file and pay the fee. In some cases you may also be asked to attend an interview, so be ready to answer questions about your travel plans and the purpose of your stay in France.
Most delays come from small problems in the file: a missing document, a form with a typo, or a visa photo that does not meet the rules. Check that all documents are complete and accurate before the appointment, and keep copies of everything you submit for your records. A France visa photo with the wrong size, a shadow on the background or a smile is one of the easiest problems to avoid, because you can check the photo online before you print it. Apply for your French visa as early as possible, especially during peak travel seasons.
Rules for a France visa can change, and fees vary with the type of visa and your nationality. For the most current information, always use the official resources: the France-Visas website for the application form and the list of documents, and the website of the French embassy or consulate in your country for local appointment and photo instructions. This page focuses on one part of the process, the photo, and makes a visa photo that follows the published size and quality rules.
A modern phone camera is more than good enough, as long as you give it good conditions. Clean the lens first: a fingerprint on the glass makes the whole photo look soft and hazy. Use the rear camera if someone can help you, because it is usually sharper than the front camera; if you are alone, use the front camera with the timer so the phone does not shake when you press the button. Hold the phone at eye level, about an arm's length away, and do not use the zoom or a wide-angle mode, which can stretch the face. Tap on your face on the screen so the camera focuses on it, and turn off portrait mode, beauty filters and any effect that blurs or smooths the image.
Stand or sit facing a window during the day, so soft light falls evenly on both sides of your face. Avoid the flash, which flattens the face and leaves bright spots on the forehead and glasses, and avoid ceiling lights directly above you, which cast shadows under the eyes. Wear everyday clothes in a colour that differs from the background, pull your hair back from your face, and take several shots in a row. Then upload the best one: our tool handles the crop, the background and the final check, so you only need a clear, well-lit face looking straight at the camera.
Take a last look at the photo at full size. The face should be in focus from the eyes to the chin, the skin tone natural, and there should be no red eyes, no shadows behind the head and no hair across the eyes. Make sure the photo is recent and still looks like you today: a new haircut or a beard you no longer wear can make the photo hard to match. If you are not sure, retake the photo; with our online maker a new photo costs nothing and takes a minute. Keep the downloaded file in a safe place as well: the same picture can be printed again later if the consulate asks for an extra copy, or if one gets bent or lost on the way to your appointment.
