Who needs a Sweden visa

A Sweden visa lets a foreign national enter, stay in or transit through Sweden for a set period. It is issued by the Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) and is needed by people who are not citizens of an EU or EEA country, unless their country is on the visa-exempt list for short stays. Check that list before you prepare your documents and your photo.

Short stays and long stays

There are two main types. A Schengen visa (type C) covers short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism, business or family visits. A national visa (type D) covers stays longer than 90 days, usually for work, study or family reunification. Both types ask for the same kind of passport-sized photo, so one 35×45 mm print works for either application.

Sweden visa photo size explained

The photo is 35 mm wide and 45 mm high (3.5×4.5 cm). In our template the head takes about 34.5 mm from chin to crown, with about 3 mm of space between the top of the hair and the top edge. The background is plain light grey with no shadows. A print at 600 DPI keeps the face sharp and the edges clean. The same file is also suitable for online submission when a digital image is accepted.

What else goes with your application

Along with two recent photos, your application usually includes:

  • A valid passport issued within the last ten years, with at least two blank pages, valid for at least three months after your planned departure.
  • The completed and signed application form for your visa type.
  • Travel medical insurance of at least €30,000, valid in all Schengen countries.
  • Proof of accommodation, such as hotel bookings or an invitation letter.
  • Proof of sufficient funds and a travel itinerary with flight reservations.

How the application works

Choose the visa type, gather your documents and fill in the form from the Migration Agency website. Then book an appointment at the nearest embassy or consulate; some countries ask you to apply through an application centre instead. Each embassy explains its own procedure, as on the tourist page of the embassy in New Delhi. At the appointment you hand in the form with your two photos and may give biometric data: fingerprints and a photograph. You pay a fee, which depends on the type and your age. Processing takes about 15 to 30 days, so apply well before your trip. If the application is refused, you have the right to appeal the decision.

Printing your photos

Print the photo on photo paper at 600 DPI and cut it to exactly 35×45 mm. Check each print before your appointment: the photo should be sharp, in colour and free of creases, ink marks or stains. Keep both photos flat in an envelope so they are not bent. If you are not sure the print is right, compare it with the template above or order a new copy rather than trimming it by hand.

Light

Face a window for even daylight and avoid direct sunlight, which leaves hard shadows. The AI replaces the background of your photo.

Common Sweden visa photo mistakes

Our AI check catches these mistakes before you download the photo.

Wrong photo size
A cropped phone photo or a print made for another document is not the 35×45 mm format.
Shadows on the background
Side or overhead light casts shadows on the wall. Use soft frontal light.
Head too small or too large
The head should fill about 34.5 mm of the 45 mm height, with a small gap above the hair.
Smile, open mouth or closed eyes
Keep a neutral face with both eyes open and your mouth closed.
Glasses or a cropped face
Take off glasses and keep your whole face inside the frame.
Old or filtered photo
The photo must be recent and unedited. Use the original photo from the camera.

Sweden visa photo FAQ

What size is a Sweden visa photo?

The Sweden visa photo size is 35×45 mm (3.5×4.5 cm), with the head about 34.5 mm from chin to crown.

How many photos do I need?

Two recent passport-sized photos that meet the Schengen requirements.

What background does a visa photo need?

A plain light grey background without shadows or patterns. Our photo maker sets it automatically.

Is the photo the same for short and long stays?

Yes. The application requirements ask for two recent passport-sized photos for type C and type D alike, so the same 35×45 mm format works for both.

Can I take the photo with my phone?

Yes, if it meets the requirements. Use daylight, keep a neutral face, and let the tool fix the size and crop.

Will they take my photo at the embassy too?

You may be asked to give biometric data, fingerprints and a photograph, when you submit your application.

Can I use the same photo for a Swedish visa and other documents?

Only if the other document asks for the same size and background. Check its photo rules first, because a photo made for one format may be rejected for another.

How much does the photo cost?

The digital photo and the check cost nothing; only the optional retouch costs $5.99.
