What the Swedish passport is for

The Swedish passport is the official travel document for citizens of Sweden. It proves your identity and Swedish nationality, and it is recognised worldwide when you enter a foreign country. The data page shows your name, date of birth and passport photo. The passport is biometric: an electronic chip stores your personal data, your photo and your fingerprints, which makes border control faster and the document harder to forge. Because the chip copy of the photo is used to check that the passport belongs to you, the photo has to follow the ICAO rules for size, head position and background.

Sweden passport photo size explained

A Sweden passport photo is 35 mm wide and 45 mm high, or 3.5×4.5 cm in portrait format. In our template the head takes up about 77% of the photo height, measured from the chin to the crown, and there is about 3 mm of space between the top of the head and the top edge of the photo. The face is centred in the frame, with the shoulders visible at the bottom.

The outer size is only half of the check. A photo can measure exactly 35×45 mm and still fail if the head is too small or too large inside the frame. A phone photo cropped by hand usually leaves too much space around the face, so the head ends up too small. Our online tool measures your face and sets the crop for you, so the head size and the photo size both match the template for a Swedish passport photo.

White background and even light

A Sweden passport photo needs a plain white background in our template. It must be free of shadows, patterns and objects, and there should be no shadow of your head on the wall behind you. Light should fall evenly on the whole face, with no bright spots on the forehead and no dark side of the face. Daylight from a window in front of you gives the most even passport photo at home. You do not need a white wall: the AI replaces whatever is behind you with a clean white background for your Swedish passport photo.

Face, pose and expression

Look straight into the camera with your head upright, not tilted or turned. Keep a neutral expression with your mouth closed and both eyes open and clearly visible. Hair must not cover the eyes or the edges of the face. Remove hats, sunglasses and anything else that hides part of the face in the passport photo. These points come from the ICAO standard that biometric passports follow, and they are the most common reasons a passport photo is refused. A calm, natural face in your Sweden passport photo is also easier to match with you at the border.

Glasses, children and babies

If you wear glasses, the eyes must be clearly visible, with no reflections on the lenses and no frame across the eyes. The simplest way to avoid a problem is to take your glasses off for the passport photo. Children need their own passport and their own passport photo in the same 35×45 mm size with the same white background. A child's passport is valid for 5 years, so a new photo is needed more often than for adults. A baby can lie on a plain white sheet so that the background of the passport photo stays even; no hand, toy or other person may be visible in the photo.

Printed photo or digital photo

Our tool gives you a digital passport photo file and a print sheet. A printed photo is cut to 35×45 mm; a print at 600 DPI keeps the fine detail of the face, so use photo paper rather than plain office paper. A digital photo file is useful where online submission of the photo is accepted. The application steps say that the photograph is taken at the appointment if you have not provided one, so ask your passport office or the Swedish embassy which form of photo it needs before you go.

Taking a passport photo at home, step by step

You do not need a studio. Stand about half a metre in front of a plain wall, facing a window, and ask someone to hold the phone at the height of your eyes. If you are alone, prop the phone on a shelf and use the timer. Take several shots and pick the sharpest passport photo. Upload it to our online passport photo maker: the AI finds your face, crops the photo to the 35×45 mm size, sets a white background and runs the check. If it finds a problem, such as closed eyes or a tilted head, you see it before you download and can take a new photo right away.

Printing your passport photo

For a printed passport photo, download the print sheet. It places several 35×45 mm photos on a standard paper size, with thin cut lines, at 600 DPI. Order a print at any photo shop and do not let the shop scale the image: a sheet resized to fit the paper changes the photo size and the head size. Cut each passport photo exactly along the lines and keep a spare passport photo in case you need one later.

Why passport photos are refused

Most refused passport photos fail for simple reasons: the head is too small in the frame, the background has a shadow, the face is not lit evenly, or the person smiles with an open mouth. Another reason is a photo that is too old to show your current face. Officials compare the passport photo with you at the counter, so a recent passport photo matters as much as the right size. Our check looks at the same points before you print your Sweden passport photo, which saves a second trip.

How to apply for a Swedish passport

Only citizens can get this passport. You must be at least 18 years old to apply on your own; minors need consent from their parents. The Swedish Police passport pages explain the process:

  • Book an appointment online at a passport office, or at a Swedish embassy or consulate if you live abroad.
  • Bring a valid national ID card or your previous passport to prove your identity.
  • Bring proof of citizenship if it applies, and documents for a change of name, if needed.
  • At the appointment, submit your application, have your photograph taken if you have not provided one, and give your fingerprints.
  • Pay the fee, which depends on your age, usually by card at the appointment.

Processing generally takes about 2–4 weeks, and you can track your application on the official website. When the passport is ready, you are notified to collect it at the passport office or embassy where you applied; bring your ID and any receipts.

Validity, renewal and lost passports

A Swedish passport is valid for 10 years for adults and 5 years for children under 18. To renew a passport that is about to expire or has expired, you follow a similar process to the first application. If your passport is lost or stolen, report it to the police and the passport authority straight away, then apply for a new passport with the police report. When travelling with children, also carry the consent of the other parent if it applies.

About the passport booklet

The booklet measures 125×88 mm when closed and typically has 32 pages for visa stamps. Watermarks, holograms and microprinting protect it against forgery, and the chip stores your biometric data. Your passport photo is printed on the data page and stored in the chip, so sharp focus, even light and a neutral face give the document a clear image.

Do you need a new passport photo to renew?

Not always. The renewal guidance says you may not need to provide a new photograph if your appearance has not changed significantly. Over 5 or 10 years, though, a face often does change: a different hairstyle, weight or simply age. If the passport photo from your previous passport no longer looks like you, bring a recent one, because the official compares the passport photo with you at the counter. Making a fresh Swedish passport photo at home takes a few minutes, and you can check it before the appointment.

Swedish passport photo when you live abroad

Citizens who live abroad apply at a Swedish embassy or consulate, with the same documents and the same biometric photo rules as in Sweden. Photo studios outside Sweden often work with other local formats, such as the 2×2 inch US passport photo, which is not the 35×45 mm size. A Sweden passport photo made with a template set to the correct size avoids this mismatch. Ask the embassy whether it takes your passport photo on site.

Checking your Sweden passport photo before the appointment

Hold the printed passport photo next to a ruler: it should measure exactly 35 by 45 mm, with the head filling most of the height. Look at it in daylight and make sure the colours look natural and there are no marks, folds or fingerprints on the print. Put the passport photos in an envelope so that they do not bend, and bring your Sweden passport photo together with your ID and other documents in one folder.

A tip for families

When the whole family needs new passports, take every passport photo in one session at home, with the same window light and the same wall. Children often need several tries, so start with them while they are rested. Check each Swedish passport photo with our online tool before you print.

Other photos for Swedish documents

If you also need an ID card, see our Sweden ID card photo page; one photo session at home can cover your Swedish passport photo and the ID card. Visitors who are not citizens can make a Sweden visa photo, which has its own page and rules.

Common passport photo mistakes

Our online AI check catches these passport photo mistakes before you download the photo.

Wrong photo size
A photo cut for another country, like a 2×2 inch US print, is not the 35×45 mm size of a Swedish passport photo.
Head too small or too large
The face must fill the frame: about 77% of the photo height, with a small margin above the head.
Shadows or a grey background
Side light casts a shadow on the wall. Use soft frontal light; the background must be plain white.
Smile, open mouth or closed eyes
The ICAO biometric rules ask for a neutral face with the mouth closed and both eyes open.
Glasses with reflections
Reflections or a thick frame hide the eyes. Take off your glasses for the passport photo.
Blurry or filtered photo
A soft, retouched or filtered photo fails the biometric check. Use the original photo from the camera.
