A Vietnam passport photo is a portrait 4×6 cm colour photo with a white background. Our AI check validates your passport photo against each parameter below.
The passport application asks for recent passport-sized photos of 4×6 cm, the same as 40×60 mm. The passport photo is taller than it is wide, so it is not the square 2×2 inch format used for some other passports. In our template the head takes about 40 mm of the 60 mm height, measured from the chin to the top of the hair, and there is a gap of about 6 mm between the top of the hair and the top edge of the photo. Your face sits in the centre, with the shoulders visible at the bottom of the frame.
The background is plain white. A grey wall, a coloured curtain or a shadow behind your head will make the photo look wrong, so our tool replaces the background with even white. Use a recent colour photo: an old print or a picture with a beauty filter may not look like you today.
If you apply in person, you hand in printed photos with the application. Print the passport photo at 300 DPI on photo paper so the 4×6 cm print stays sharp, then cut it along the edges. You can print the file at home or at a print shop, and it is worth keeping a spare copy for later.
For a passport application filed online, you need a digital passport photo file instead of a print. Our template keeps the file under 45 KB, so the passport photo stays light enough to upload. Do not take a picture of a printed photo with your phone: a photo of a photo loses sharpness and colour, and the result often looks blurry.
Citizens submit the Vietnam passport application at the nearest Immigration Department office. If you live abroad, you apply for your Vietnamese passport at the embassy or consulate. Some steps of the application can be completed online through the Vietnam National Public Service Portal, where you can also find the application form. For current procedures, forms and updates, check the Vietnam Immigration Department website.
The authorities verify the documents and your biometric data before the passport is approved and issued. A renewal follows a similar process to a new application, and it is a good idea to apply a few months before your passport expires. You will need a new passport photo for the renewal as well, since the photo should be recent.
The passport is your identity and travel document. It carries your name, date of birth, nationality and your passport photo, and modern passports also hold biometric data such as fingerprints. The passport has a machine-readable zone that is scanned at airports and border controls, plus holograms, watermarks and other security features. Your passport photo is the picture that officers compare with your face at the border, so it has to look like you and follow the official photo format.
Citizens who live outside the country apply for a Vietnamese passport at an embassy or consulate. The passport photo rules are the same as at home: a 4×6 cm colour photo with a white background. Photo booths and print shops abroad often make 2×2 inch or 35×45 mm passport photos for local documents, and those sizes do not match. Make your passport photo online with our tool and print it yourself at 4×6 cm.
A passport is typically valid for 10 years for adults and 5 years for minors. The renewal follows a similar process to a first application, including new passport photos. Start a few months before the expiry date, and do not reuse the passport photo from your old Vietnam passport: the photo should show how you look today. If your Vietnamese passport is lost or stolen, report it at once to the local police and, if you are abroad, to the nearest Vietnamese embassy or consulate, before you apply for a replacement passport.
Wear everyday clothes in a colour that stands out from the white background; a white shirt can blend into it, so a darker top works better for a passport photo. Remove hats, sunglasses and headphones. Keep your hair away from your eyes so the outline of your face is easy to see. Simple jewellery is fine, but large earrings or shiny accessories can distract from the face in the photo.
You do not need a studio to get a passport photo. Ask someone to take the picture from about 1.5 metres away, or take a selfie with your arm stretched out. Upload the photo online and our AI crops it to the passport photo size, centres your head, replaces the background and checks the face, light and sharpness. If something is wrong, you see what to fix and can retake the photo in a minute, at no cost.
A child's Vietnam passport photo follows the same 4×6 cm size and white background as an adult photo. The child looks straight at the camera with both eyes open and nobody else in the frame. For a baby, lay the child on a plain white sheet and take the photo from above; our AI then crops the photo and evens out the background.
The Vietnamese passport photo is for citizens. If you are a foreign visitor going to Vietnam, you need a visa photo instead, which has its own format; see our Vietnam visa photo page. Even with a valid Vietnam passport, check the visa rules of the country you are going to before you travel.
Hold the phone at arm's length, camera at eye level. Our tool crops the photo to the 4×6 cm passport photo size and straightens it.
Look into the lens with a neutral face and your mouth closed. Take off your glasses and keep your hair away from your face before you take the photo.
Face a window for even daylight and avoid direct sunlight, which leaves hard shadows in the photo. The AI replaces the background with white for your passport photo.
